And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

My Tivo went a little nuts yesterday and for some reason decided I really wanted to see the 1:30am Top Chef instead of the first broadcast. So I haven't seen it yet.

Because books.

Jamie was pretty shocked she didn't get the win, too.

My favorite was Tom's face when he sent the losing teams back to the stew room so the judges could deliberate -- the facepalm and the boggling at Daniel sealed his fate right there, I thought.

That Chilean sea bass dish was so boring. Fabio definitely sold it -- it sounded good when he explained the blue concept, but it really was just fish on some mushy vegetables. They're lucky one of them didn't get booted, and Eugene should consider himself lucky, too. That sushi thing was a train wreck.

I know. Why not go with something like, I don't know, bluefish. Sure, it's a very strong, oily fish, but it's defnitely not boring or safe.

That sushi thing was a train wreck.

Even if he hadn't botched the rice, AND had bothered to explain the concept, the "make your own sushi" idea was really lame for a bridal shower. Also, doesn't learning how to correctly roll sushi take a least a bit of training?

I just wasn't sure what they were supposed to do with that shrimp skewer. And in the shots of them eating it, they all looked uncomfortable and vaguely pissed off. You want to eat something messy and clumsy like that at home, not at a party.

I was surprised by the Quickfire, too -- only Lee, Jamie, and Stefan really seemed willing to *play* and one-up each other to compete.

And then the shrimp was COLD.

Yeah, I thought that Eugene might go home but Daniel's completely incorrect perception that his food was good totally sealed his fate.

I was so amused that Jeff's sorbet was the favorite of that group. I sadly missed Stefan's expression. (Although I can imagine it.)

Didn't Leah say something about their dish missing some pizzaz? Some crunch or something?

Because books.

She did -- said it needed more crunch, which I guess they were thinking the cornmeal would provide?

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

And then the shrimp was COLD.

Seriously. People worried about serving sorbet in that set-up, but tempura's no better.

There is a snippet of Phil Keoghan on the Bonnie Hunt show at her website.

Punishingly Intricate

Oh man I like Eugene but he's very lucky Daniel was delusional about the food. What a mess!! And Carla not speaking up in the beginning drove me batty!

What else could they have done for New? I was thinking of something w/ new potatoes and baby vegetables. I don't know about the protein though.

New potatoes, baby veg. New techniques?
