I just stumbled across the weekend ratings:
1. Fast & Furious 6 $38,200,000 $38.2
2. The Hangover III $14,530,000 $26.2
3. Star Trek Into Darkness $10,200,000 $119
4. Epic $9,350,000 $9.3
5. Iron Man 3 $5,113,000 $353.1
That's a record for F&F. I think it's the Rock influence.
So I went to see The Sapphires tonight, which is a darling little movie about four Australian aborigine girls who form a Motown girl-band and go to Vietnam to entertain American troops. The sweetest thing is that the screenplay was written by the son of one of the original women who actually did that. And we got a special session after the movie with a guy who's the nephew of the women in the movie.
It's not brilliant, but it's enjoyable and the music is great.
1. Fast & Furious 6 $122M
2. The Hangover Part III $51M
3. Star Trek Into Darkness $48M
4. Epic $44M
5. Iron Man 3 $24.6M
Vroom vroom! (That's the estimated four-day gross, three-day being $98.6 million.)
I need to go back and read what y'all wrote about Trek, but I just saw it. So many lens flares. So much stupid.
We saw it last night. Pete spent the drive home ranting about everything that was wrong, dumb, and frustrating, which was entertaining. My take-aways from the movie were: J.J. Abrams shouldn't have been allowed near the Star Trek franchise, Simon Pegg as Scotty is still adorable, and I really like Cumberbatch's voice even if all he's doing is chewing on the scenery.
I actually was okay with Abrams for the first movie. I thought that was well done and saw the movie a 2nd time soon after the 1st.
This movie though really chapped my hide.

I don't think Abrams could do a coherent version of
Make Way for Ducklings.
Wow, I really missed the disliking-STiD boat, huh? I still thought it was a lot of fun. I doubt I'll buy it like I did the first one, but I'd watch it again on Netflix streaming for sure.
I will rewatch it too! I will stop when the
torpedoes go off in Khan's newly acquired ship.
And maybe FF until the final 5 minutes. The End!
I thought it was fun too. Stupid, but fun.
I read a complaint that old!Kirk respected women, with a not-so-between-the-lines implication that nuKirk did not.
I'm trying to imagine Shatner's Kirk evincing any particular respect for women, or Pine's Kirk being a sexist ass that's new to the franchise (for some reason my brain keeps replacing Shatner's communicator with an ERA Now! button), and I'm not sure what in particular they're referring to.
