Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own

This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I'm kind of confused as to how she screwed it up.

From what I've gathered watching Iron Chef and TAR, ostrich eggs just don't taste very good. They also have a completely different texture than a chicken egg, so if you treat one ostrich egg like a dozen chicken eggs without making any other adjustments, you're going to wind up with something tough and gluey.

Given the options available to her, she'd have been much better off buying some chicken eggs and some duck/goose/quail or other exotics to round out the flavors.

Punishingly Intricate

I really like Fabio! He's funny to me not obnoxious like Stefan. I liked Hosea until he made that crab mistake.

Here's an interview with Jill:

I really wanted to try Jamie's sweet corn soup. That sounded delicious.

I would totally eat that winning meal (if you put together the top three) every day. Well, once a week, anyways.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Stefan is the sort of arrogant that rubs me the wrong way immediately.

Especially that "There's nothing wrong with my hot dog!" bitch he made. Oh well, they seem to need a talented asshole every year - it's probably him.

The Fabio/Stefan show is good reality TV, but I think I would have tossed both of them off the balcony by now if I had to live in that house.

I was really disappointed in Hosea for going with the canned crab. Dude, "rethink your whole dish"?? I've been to that Whole Foods - their fish/seafood department is bigger than my ENTIRE APARTMENT. Don't even try to tell me canned crab was your only option. It's a freaking SALAD. Make it with shrimp. Or tuna. Or chilean sea bass. Or scallops.

EXACTLY!!!! See what's fresh and use that!

Which is, ironically enough, pretty much the mantra for all New American Cuisine.

Art Crawl!!!

Yeah - he failed in the grocery store.

Tom C. is very dismayed (per his blog) about the cheftestants outdated view of "New American Cuisine."

Right, exactly. Use fresh and, if at all possible, local. It makes me crazy when I know stuff that the chefs don't seem to know. Since I'm just an eater, reader, and unremarkable home cook.

And the three winners really fit into that, where they're sort of showcasing a fresh ingredient. (The dessert might be iffy there I guess, but at least wasn't totally fussy and overdone like most of the rest.) Which is nice to see, because the judging doesn't always reflect the stated point so well.
