"When's the last time you saw a trailer that made the crowd ooh and cheer?"
I was going to reply to this in the movie thread, but I thought I'd ask something in here first before I got all 'Well, as I can safely speak for all 19 million Australians'. So, Aussies - is it just my town, or do we just not cheer in the cinema?
Seriously, I can't remember ever being in an audience where we collectively cheered at something, whether it be a cool trailer or Leo Dicaprio dying while resembling a frosty-fruit. There's lots of laughing, sniffling, annoying crinkling of junk-food wrappers and Legolas got an 'oooh' for his horsey stunt in TTT, but that's about it, in my experience. It's odd, I'm suddenly really curious about this.
No, it's not just you, Leigh; it's never happened to me either. The biggest audible audience reaction I've ever heard to a film is a polite round of applause when they rolled the closing credits. (Apart from involuntary ones like laughter, gasps etc.)
It's my feeling that audiable responses to films are minimal, too. Maybe a round of applause, but not always. Laughter normally quelled quickly. It's one of the things that makes going to the cinema so very different to seeing a play live.

My hunch would be that Britain and Australia would be similar in this respect (and probably continental Europe too...or is there a north/south split in Europe on audience participation perhaps? And does it happen all over North America, eg what about Canada?) As you can see Leigh has actually touched on a minor obsession of mine too!
BTW, I'll mention this here rather than Beep Me because I don't want to cause a mass outpouring (!) but in the past couple of days I've been getting symptoms that are a little bit reminiscent of last year's big health crisis. So some healthy vibes would be appreciated. If anything happens (ie if I end up in hospital) I'll let Plasmo know. Although I'm actually feeling a fair bit better than I was 24 hours ago, so fingers crossed.

Yeah, I had this once, too. It was even quite exuberant. It was also at a showing of Gladiator, so I think it was less appreciation of the film's pure artistry and more relief that Russell finally conked it.
Edit - That sucks Angus, I hope it turns out to be nothing. I'm trying to think of health vibey things and all I'm coming up with is the Sound of Music 'These are a few of my favourite things' song, which is both useless and ear-wormy.

Leigh ... I think you're pretty safe saying Aussies, as a rule, don't do that stuff.
Having said that, I have been to a double-bill where people applauded and cheered during the opening and closing credits and most places in between. Of course, it was a double-bill of
Plan 9 From Outer Space
and
Robot Monster
and the audience was made up of nutters, so it was a rare occurence. :)
