Leigh ... I think you're pretty safe saying Aussies, as a rule, don't do that stuff.
Having said that, I have been to a double-bill where people applauded and cheered during the opening and closing credits and most places in between. Of course, it was a double-bill of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Robot Monster and the audience was made up of nutters, so it was a rare occurence. :)
