No, train would be silly, none actually stop in Baton Rouge (something I think about whenever I listen to Me and Bobby McGee) and any possible route would take way longer than I'd actually be there for the reunion. Alas.
But flying+car rental+hotel isn't too bad. I mean, a lot to drop in one weekend in the normal way of thengs but it's kind of a big event. OTOH, I'm trying to be frugal.
Well, more than two months from now, I can think about it some more.
Baton Rouge...Me and Bobby McGee
I always figured, since they were "busted flat," that they were planning to hop a freight train.
On the other hand, KCS ran the Southern Belle between Kansas City and New Orleans, and it stopped at their station in Baton Rouge. Last run was November 1, 1969, so just about the time the song was written.
Nice! Now I can think about that every time! Thanks!
Not only am I in neither Iceland nor Spain for tomorrow's eclipse, I'll be on a Zoom call so I can't even watch online. I'll have a window open just in case I get an opportunity but I'm hosting the call so probably not. Glad I at least know several people who are out there to experience it!
Could be. Or hitchiking, which was still a thing you could think about without considering being chopped into little pieces in the sixties.
Or hitchiking
"Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained...."
Well it’s pretty cloudy here in Iceland so not looking good for the eclipse later. hopefully the cruise Pix and ND are on managed to find them a sunny spot!
Sigh. Pouring rain now so does not seem likely that the weather will magically clear up. Ah well.
I don't think there were trains even going through BR when I lived there, not even freight, but maybe they passed through parts of town I didn't go to. It felt like my hour-long bus ride to school went everywhere but of course it did not actually. Later than the song took place, of course.
Hardcore weather ~ma, meara! You just need a few minutes of clearish skies, it could happen!
Sending clear~sky~ma to people in the eclipse zones.
No eclipse here, but tomorrow night we should have clear skies for the Milky Way and Perseids viewing. My Weather Underground page for my zip code (13338) has been broken for a week or so and always shows my current temperature as -40F, which amuses me as it does happen, just not in August. The other info is accurate.
The eclipse livestream on YouTube channel timeanddate is excellent. Feeds from multiple cities.
