Spike's Bitches 47: Someone Dangerous Could Get In

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

Friends don't let friends read "Atlas Shrugged"

You know, sticking to a diet that is devoid of fat, carbs, sugar, etc., and exercising may not make you live longer, but it will probably feel that way (old joke).

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Yeah, I've been getting really irritated at a lot of the comments about Paula Deen that I've been seeing, especially from a few vegan friends who seem to be taking this opportunity to live up to all the self-righteous vegan stereotypes that they usually insist aren't true. And, no matter how many times I say, "Hi, overweight high-cholesterol vegan STANDING RIGHT HERE," they're insisting that their diets are saving them from all of that "horrible" stuff like being fat and sick.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

There is nothing immoral or moral about eating. Seriously. It's just food.

Unless it's my food. Seriously: step off my food.

Paula Deen revealed that she has diabetes, and there has been a flurry of smug nasty comments about how it's "just desserts" because she cooks with butter, etc.

Ah. The food equivalent of slut-shaming, I take it. (Glut-shaming?)

I’m responsible for my own happiness? I can’t even be responsible for my own breakfast! (Bojack Horseman)

Tony Bourdain, I heart you, but step off. You're already on record with your too-much-butter bitching, man...do you really have to pick the scab?

SERIOUSLY. He probably eats as many saturated fats as anyone on the planet, and he's thin as a reed and assumed, therefore, as "healthy." (though we don't know but since he's not outwardly fat he's not thought of as outwardly unhealthy) Ugh.

Unless it's my food. Seriously: step off my food.

HAAAAA.

Ah. The food equivalent of slut-shaming, I take it. (Glut-shaming?)

Love it.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

There is nothing immoral or moral about eating. Seriously. It's just food.

I know lots of people attach the shame directly to eating, and that's bad. But if you've made a resolution to do something (eat or not eat something, go to the gym, perform any task) and you slip up on that...then that can have a judgment attached to it.

If someone knows I'm on a low-carb diet and comments on me eating pie, then that's one thing. But the assumption that everyone (and *especially* if you're bigger than a size 4, but if you are a size 4, surely you value that and are trying to maintain it) should or should not be eating anything--the fuck?

I had a co-worker shriek that I shouldn't drink a Pellegrino soda, because it had, like, five hundred grams of sugar (32), and that one shouldn't have more than 1 gram of sugar per pound of body weight...

I explained to him that a) he had no idea how much sugar I'd eaten that day and b) I actually eat as much sugar as I please, and there was no need to assume he knew my dietary motivations. He then went on to explain that the rest of my food was simple carbs, and we promptly argued for five minutes (and google proved me right) that I was chowing down on complex carbs, and if he wanted to get glycemic index on me, he might have an argument, but then again, I still don't care...

Anyway, the next day I saw him cheerfully eating a doughnut, and I asked him why he thought he needed to try and make my food healthier if he ate like that.

Turns out he has some array of trainers and shit. I explained to him that my mother was a nutritionist, so I knew all the medically approved answers, but I DON'T CARE.

I'm surprised, but he hasn't commented on any of my food since then.

Seriously, go find someone who wants an external conscience and volunteer to help them. Assuming everyone needs your "assist" is prickish and invasive.

I swear I had a coherent point when I started. Never mind, I'm pretty fucked up with pain and not thinking straight.

Pretty much.

Ugh, ita, I'm so sorry you're in so much pain.

Always Anti-fascist!

I know I have a fast metabolism, Nora. One of the few breaks I got at birth(Which still, incidentally, does not truly mean that I eat "whatever I want" but it does mean that I don't sweat my weight much.) Bourdain's metabolism blows mine out of the water, clearly. I could never eat that much beer-and-gonads. Most shows end with a hangover segment...Polly Purebread finds that a little disturbing. Paula Deen may be a TV personality with a bully pulpit of sorts and opportunities but I think she speaks to people who aren't getting paid to globetrot.

The shaming around Paula Deen seems to be related a lot to class issues, too. I mean, having a fancy steak with a bleu cheese sauce and some bread on the side is more or less nutritionally equivalent to having a cheeseburger, but the people who make and eat the cheeseburger get a whole lot more "You're making yourself fat and sick" shaming than the people who make and eat the steak do.

ALL YOUR TIM TAMS ARE BELONG TO ME.

Even the Tia Maria Tim Tams? I think not!

My office Christmas party saw us take a field trip to the local wine region. It was a pleasant day all up (and I got my Biblical analysis on with my boss), but one of my coworkers, for reasons that defy my understanding, decided it was appropriate for him to tell me I should stop drinking so much Coke Zero, in order to lose weight. Do I drink a lot of Coke Zero? Yes. Yes I do. Is it any of his damn business? No, it is not. (And may I add, step off my food.)

In tangentially related news, I did my regular medical and dental check-ups, this week, and got a clean bill of health. Very happy about that, especially the dental check-up. Due to various factors, it's been three years since my last visit, and I'm not the most fastidious about flossing. (Plus, did I mention about the Coke Zero?)
