Oh, also? I'm totally dying in this heat. I grew up here but 25 years away made me forget precisely how much I'm not built for this.
I haven't wanted to cook anything for meals because of the heat. So today I broke out my solar oven and am cooking jambalaya in there. The heat can stay outside.
Where are you located, Sophia?
A suggestion for replacing bread on sandwiches--try using fried green plaintains. It's what Chicagoans call a jibarito.
Yikes, that's an early frost date. I hope they come through for you. Everyone I know in CA has been complaining about the short season. It rained a lot longer this spring. Though we need it very badly, it also ruined a number of stone fruit crops and made things start later in marginal sun climates like the marine Bay Area.
That sounds delicious, Kathy, but it's still starch. (Not that I'm being good about my low glycemic diet at the moment. Stress around here was too much for me. Need to get back on the wagon again.)
I guess I can eat a lot of fried green tomatoes!
I've heard of techniques for ripening up green ones, too. Also, green ones should work well in salsas and chutneys.

Oh, well, I was thinking the problem might have been gluten. I had my first jibarito just a few weeks ago at a Cuban restaurant (yes, it started out at a Puerto-Rican place, but you can find them at several Latin American restaurants now).
