If he says something about next year, you can say "I've realized that I need a stronger skill set in an assistant. than you possess. I'll be advertising for a new assistant next season, and I would love to see how you've developed in the interim. You'll have a leg up with our history, but if you don't have the skills, I will be looking elsewhere"

Think of it this way, you can feel good about giving someone deserving a good opportunity when they are struggling in this economy, and perhaps he can find something that would be a better fit-and therefore more stable for him in the long run.

He re-rigged the speakers, as needed by lighting, and said the task was done. But they weren't focused, or the cable run made pretty. "Ya, but that's like 5 minutes, no big deal". So just do it! Than we can call the job done! Nope. He kinda half-asses everything. It's not like the work won't have to be done later? Grrrr.
