I didn't even turn on my computer for just that reason.
I'm not surprised Kayla was last, she was in the bottom a number of times. I was just relieved that Evan was third so I could relax. Glad to see that breaking down and voting might have had some result.
So in season's past, they haven't made a big deal out of 4th place, 3rd place, etc. They've just eliminated people until they got down to the winner. I distinctly recall S3 when Sabra won, Nigel admitted in interviews post-season that Danny did not come second even though the order of elimination on top 4 night was Lacey, Neil, Danny and Sabra declared the winner. But they made such a big deal out of the 4th place, 3rd place thing tonight, who knows? I can totally believe that was the actual order of finish. Kayla and her stank attitude turned lots of people off, even though she is an amazing dancer. The judges did a total hit job on Evan, so I can see him coming third. And I totally and fully believe that Jeanine flat out won. Tons of signs for her at the taping.
Both the Top 16 group routine and the top 8 group routine were pre-taped. And yes, seeing Shankdaddy and Ms. Debbie Allen with her out of control weave was perhaps the highlight of my entire life. Bitch can still move.
I thought some of the judges' picks were just odd. The Asuka/Vitolio waltz? The Chbeeb/Jeanine NappyTab piece? Jai Ho? Really? Also, it was curious how many of the favorite dances came before the top 10, even before top 12. Doesn't say a lot for the back half of the season. That said, the Kayla/Kupono piece was even better tonight than it was the first time. They were stunning. And Kupono is sooooo pretty. Likewise, the Jeanine/Jason piece was so glorious. And that is just a damn sexy dance. Whoo, child! And the Janette and Brandon tango remains the best tango ever done on this show (although the first time was even better!) and it's a ridiculously tough routine. I loved Mark and Chelsie's tango, but Janette really just brings it in that routine.
I can't believe that they picked the disco over the jazz/broadway piece with Brandon and Janette. I wonder if that was because of the lack of stairs on the Kodak set.
Side note: they need to get rid of disco as a dance genre here. Bring in crumping or something.
They tried crumping in S2. Travis and Martha. It was somewhat less than buck. Although I'm actually a fan of the Chuy/Sara Krump, I still think it's not quite right. I can't even with the Dom/Mischa Chan krump but at least we got to see Lauren almost bust her ass. That was fun. And I Get Money is a great song.
Yes, please no crumping. That was not good.
Honestly, I wish they would be closer to the mix of the early seasons with more ballroom and less broadway.
I continue to want a damn two-step that ISN'T that awful awful heinous one that Mark and Chelsie (?) did. Come ON people. Two step does NOT need to suck like that.
And was there ANY west coast swing this year? Why not?? (Hint: West Coast Swing CAN be sexy, it does NOT have to be all Benji-esque!!!)
I actually think Doriana was better this season than she's been since S1. I thought both the Janette/Brandon and the Kayla/Brandon discos were great fun. If I could eliminate anything it would be the frikkin' Paso, mainly because the choreographers refuse to actually choreograph one, or Broadway since they insist on using Tyce, a fine contemporary/lyrical/jazz choreographer who can't do Broadway pieces. And I agree, I'd love to see a good two step. I'd love to see them bring back the mambo, which they haven't done since S2 with Heidi and Benji.
Heck, I'd settle for some decent hip hop again. When a second rate NappyTab piece is the best that they can do for the finale, something is very wrong with the state of hip hop on this show. Oh, well. ABDC on Sunday.
During Benji's season, they chose the judges favorite dances based on the fact that the top 4 had so many injuries. They were in rough condition by the finale, so the fave dances were an odd mix.
I wonder if something similar happened last night.
what did I miss? who was injured?
I kinda can't believe neither Wade routine was used last night. Also kinda can't believe that top 4 group routine was Wade, that is the worst Wade I've ever seen.
Also kinda can't believe that top 4 group routine was Wade, that is the worst Wade I've ever seen.
Yeah, that was horrific.
I just realized they don't do "lyrical" anymore. Not that that's not a good thing since I never really understood the difference between that and contemporary anyway.
I agree that the two discos kat mentions were great fun. I'm happy to keep disco in the mix a few times a season.
Mostly, I just really wish they would actually draw partners and dances each week.
