Non-Fiction TV: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
This thread is for non-fiction TV, including but not limited to reality television (So You Think You Can Dance, Top Chef: Masters, Project Runway), documentaries (The History Channel, The Discovery Channel), and sundry (Expedition Africa, Mythbusters), et al. [NAFDA]
TCM: I've recently become gluten intolerant and used to be a vegetarian so I was really bugged that couldn't see how many possibilities Whole Foods offered to them. Quinoa isn't the only, and not the best wheat-free pasta and I agree that coconut milk would have been much better.
SYTYCD: Jeanine or Brandon should win. But, the best dancer rarely does. Travis, Danny, Katie were all better than the person who won. And the list of better dancers who didn't make it into the final four is even longer. Allyson, Pasha, Sara, Will...I know there's more.
Or, for a non-bought dessert, he could have made sorbet. He could use the strawberries and make something like strawberry sorbet with balsamic and mint syrups swirled through it (mmm, that sounds good, actually) or gone with some sort of interesting fruit combination like papaya and raspberry.
I actually really like the taste of quinoa pasta. And I don't really like quinoa.
It falls apart too easily for me. I prefer the stuff with potato and rice, it holds together better.
I don't watch Top Chef, but am totally craving quinoa now...

I just watched last night's show, and assumed that's what the judges were trying to say about Kayla--that they didn't think she would/should win, but not to fret, because they knew she was good anyway, like other people who didn't win.
And I am SO adoring Jeanine (though agree that the rose was a bit much...and yet, if I'd tried to clench that thing in my teeth WHILE doing those turns? Hell no. Not that I could do those turns anyway. But still.) And I loved Mia's piece, but Kayla's legs were so pretty in it that it did make Jeanine fade a tiny bit for me. Sad.
My one big gripe about the Broadway number was that with the lights and the shiny jacket, I couldn't see Brandon's dancing for all the flashiness--there was too much glare on my TV! Yeesh. Maybe in person it was better, but...damn.
I liked the paso doble to end, it was very drama and whizbang to end the finale and all...but was kind of rolling my eyes thinking "will we ever see an actual paso doble to an actual paso doble type song ever again on this show?"
And I also am crossing my fingers we get some choreography whiz Kasparzak on next season....I'm so over Evan. He's adorable, and I hope he gets some great work on Broadway or wherever, but...geez.
OMG, the lights! And the camera angles on that were awful, but there wasn't much they could do because the lights were so bad. I was all, I don't even know what they're doing because I can't even see.
I wondered with Mia's piece why she didn't stage Kayla further back and Jeanine closer to the front because of those legs. Kayla's longer lines would have translated just as well from further back and Jeanine's detail work would have been more evident. But maybe Kayla's coloring would have faded out more in the background.
Still, an inspired piece. And what makes it so successful is the restrained use of space. Pay attention budding choreos! You don't have to flutter all over the whole stage to own it.
SYTYCD-- I loved Janine's solo last night the end when she slowly turned and ended was just amazing. I'm worried all the (deserved) criticism of Evan will have people voting for him.
TCM - I'm watching this for the first time (although I've got the dvr set for past episodes) and I could have come up with a better dessert. And I'm surprised the gluten intolerante person didn't know about pasta besides wheat, I mean I know about them just from looking at the shelves, but I guess if you don't go down that aisle. But Vegetarian Times did a feature on gluten free a few months ago and featured pasta made from corn so there must be other ways to get info if you are gluten free.
As for the dessert, I wasn't sure what the season was and what they had to work with. But I was thinking he could have gone with something like a grilled pineapple with a glaze of brown sugar, rum, some smart balance. If he cut the pineapple through the top and kept the leaves on, then sort of filleted the pineapple off the rind, left that whole, skewered the pineapple, grilled it and glazed it, then laid it back on the rind, so it looked whole (does that make sense) and served it with -- maybe a tropical fruit salsa. Not a traditional dessert.
With the strawberries,maybe a crumble thing, where he cooked the strawberries and put some chopped nuts mixed with margarine and butter in ramekins and cooked it a bit.
Or! I don't know poach a whole pears in wine, make a sauce, make some brittle.
Of course it's easy to say that when I have the luxury of thinking this up without freaking out over the restrictions.

I don't know a lot about veganism, but the idea that you don't eat eggs suprises me. I mean, the chickens lay them anyway. Is there some objection to how chickens are raised and forced to lay? What about free-range chickens? which I bring up since Hil mentioned how many eggs would have been in a flourless chocolate torte.
I was thinking of other fruit desserts, too, askye, like a crumble with granola or something. Or just straight up chocolate of some kind, or chocolate-dipped fruit.
