`He combed his hair, Put on a shirt that his mother made, And he went on the air...'

I'm still a bit embarrassed about my fangirl status as it is a very new experience for me. (Unless you count going to see The Last of the Mohicans nine times.) But yes, I'd like to class my Buffy DVDs as ``essential purchases'' and not feel guilty.

What should one look out for when buying a DVD player? Any suggestions? Do you have to have a really posh TV to make it worthwhile? Cash is limited somewhat, being newly separated with two little kids (wallow in self-pity...)

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

And for God's sake, isn't that the Lennon child playing bass for the band?

Yep, that's Sean Lennon on bass.

"When She was Bad" is a great episode, though if memory serves, it wasn't received so well when it was released. My only gripe with the ep is the horrendously bad continuity error -- though to be fair to the script supervisor, it was a fault in the editing process.

moonlit ... in-store business has been a bit slow lately, thanks in part to the weather and the time of year but mostly to the extremely disruptive roadworks happening outside. Oddly enough, the online business has really picked up in the last month or so. :)

To every idea a shelf...

Sorry, I don't know a great deal about DVD players. We picked a middle-range one - quality brand but not too many fancyshmancy features. I think it was around $350 but that was a year and a half ago and prices have dropped heaps since then. The TV we have is pretty crap, but you can still see the difference in quality.

You know what helps alleviate self-pity? Buffy DVDs. (Devil's advocate....)

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

jimi - I'm just curious - what continuity error? I think everyone in the states liked When She Was Bad (for the most part). Not the most comforting episode, but a strong one character-wise.

Oh wait - before I post, let me guess. The master had bones - no other vampire EVER in the ME-verse left bones after getting dusted. Was that it?

Kassto ... you should be able to get a really decent player for under 200 bucks. My Magnavox MDVD-100 only cost me AUD178 and it's terrific -- unfortunately, the next production run of the machine used a different ROM chip, which can't be flashed.

Although the brand name DVD players usually offer the better connections etc., the "no name" brands are often the better option for folks with TVs that have no A/V sockets. The brand name players can't be flashed to remove the macrovision copy protection software, so on top of buying the player, you need to buy a seperate RF Unit so you can run the player through the VCR.

Nope, not that. I'll whitefont to avoid ruining the episode for those who don't want to know: It's a silly continuity error to do with clothing. In the scene where Joyce is driving Buffy to school and asks if they'd be a point asking what's wrong, Buffy is wearing one outfit. In the next scene, when she calls Cordy a moron, she's wearing a different outfit. The next scene is at the Bronze. When we finally get back to school again, Buffy is wearing the outfit she had on during the drive to school. In other words, the drive to school scene, should've been after the Bronze, not before it. A stupid mistake made during editing and one I find increasingly annoying !

Interesting. Becuase the fact that unlike ANY OTHER VAMPIRE INCLUDING ONES THAT WERE OLDER, A.K.A. KAKISTOS, NOT TO MENTION THE UBER VAMP , THE MASTER LEFT BONES BEHIND, WHICH REALLY CAUSES SOME CONTINUITY ISSUES.

Sorry for the ASSCAPS, but this is one for those who nitpick the later seasons to death.

Whew - glad I got that out.

Was going to edit, but decided just to say - jimi this wasn't remotely directed at you - it's just a HUGE glitch early on that I never hear boo about, when later seasons get nit-picked beyond the point of reason. I'm tempted to re-post this elsewhere.

Now, as an editor, have to respond to this.

Usually, when I'm editing, I'm the one person who has to try to correct the errors that everyone else made. If anyone notices mistakes, it's editors, and for the sake of the film, they're trying to get rid of them. The problem is that you're the last in the chain; there's usually no option of going back and redoing anything.

Based on my own experience, I'd say that, if costuming didn't make the error, the director probably decided to move one scene for dramatic purposes. A comparison with the shooting script might help clear it up.

BTW, jimi, it's season 2, I don't think we need to whitefont any more.

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

Fiona ... I know the ep is old news but I whitefonted b/c being alerted to the error is new news to some folks and it could ruin the ep for them and far be it from me to cause that.

Apologies to you and all the other editors out there; I worded that incorrectly. The mistake was made during the editing process but that's not to say it was the editors mistake. The responsibility ultimately falls to the director and/or producer.

Ken ... s'okay, I didn't think your post was directed at me. I can't say I go along with you though b/c I've never considered the Master bones an issue. He's a "special" vampire, so having his bones stick around doesn't seem out of phase with the rest of the Jossverse.

Kassto--what you should look for is definitely a "region-free" (aka multizone) DVD player, so you can play DVDs from overseas, as well as bootleg DVDs your friends bring home from Asian holidays...The range of DVDs released in Region 4 (which I assume NZ is in as well as Aus) is quite pathetic. Fortunately, I believe most DVD players can be altered/hacked to be region-free; but mine actually came as region-free out of the box. Anyway, jimi is definitely the expert on these things!
