I don't know about films, but certainly in rock and roll, bands like the Who used to prefer touring the States to touring some of the more sedate parts of the world. It wasn't just the money; Pete Townsend once said he liked the way screaming enthusiastic cheering felt going up and down his back.
I have to say, the last time I cheered at a movie? Really cheered? Far too long ago: it was Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, clunking out in a loader to face the Big Bad Alien Queen, snarling "Get away from her, you bitch!"
I admit it. I cheered. But the entire audience did, as well.
I've been to the cinema in the US, Britain and several other European countries - though not, sadly, in Australia. IME, US audiences are much more participatory as a rule, regardless of the film, though some genres do seem to bring it out more than others. I actually think it adds to the viewing experience, if the audience is in the same kind of mood as I am. If they're not, it bugs me.

I like the talking to the screen thing. I'm a freak, but sometimes the people are just as funny as what's onscreen.

This is me. I have to be in just the right mood for a particular movie anyway, so perhaps I'm a wee bit picky. I saw
The Matrix
with my sister, right when it came out so the theatres were full, and it was great. She's one of those who jumps at every quick cut, gets all wriggly and nervous when the ominous music comes on, etc. And it was so much better having her there reacting to every little thing they threw at you.
But ususally that stuff would really annoy. I think I don't like other people that I don't know reminding me that they're there too. Gosh I'm friendly, aren't I?
so.. you know, I sleep and you people talk. That just seems so wrong.

I love going to the movies and I think I’ve only been bothered three or four times by people talking, and someone usually told them to shut up pretty quickly.
I can only remember a spontaneous applause response from a movie audience once. Maybe twice. Outside of a premiere.
There's far more of a buzz in Live Theatre. Although I would say it's a respectful buzz.
The first time I was in NY I saw about five (live theatre) shows in a week. Now, this was around Christmas, and I'll admit I didn't spring for the expensive tickets.. and I get the whole festive season frivolity, people that don't normally go, do, thing. I do. But honestly, these people shouldn't have been allowed to sit on public transport. They were rude, and ungracious, and discourteous. Between the lack of reception, the mobile telephones, the running commentaries (and critiques) and the general natter levels, there were times when I could not, quite honestly, follow what was happening on the stage.
And this wasn't off off Broadway somewhere out in Brooklyn either. This was world class theatre. I tore strips off a couple that were literally having sex in the seats next to me during Sondheim's Passion. (Okay, maybe not literally having of the sex. But certainly hands in wrong places, and accompanying grunts of response!)

This same exact thing happened to me during the national tour of Beauty and the Beast. These people were having sex at a children's show! (well, same thing-- hands in wrong places, grunting and moaning)
Hands in wrong places (in a different location the right places) leading to mutual grunts and moans is sex.

Leigh, I agree. The only occassions I've seen a loud audience have been applause at the end of films. Recently I've seen it happen in Moulin Rouge, and Whalerider, however the director was in the latter screening so that was an exception.
much dancing occurred during the screening of The Buena Vista Social Club.
Moonlit, that sounds like the perfect environment to see a film like that! But then, I dream of doing boxing training with "Girl Fight" being projected on a crumbled wall in the gym.
