I had shingles and got diagnosed right away and they gave me Valtrex and it worked like a charm. Go team effective drugs with no side effects (for me)! I had a coworker with a too young to be vaccinated baby at the time but we figured our contact was limited enough that we didn't worry much.

Apparently shingles uses the same nerve paths set up by chicken pox. What's even freakier is that psoriasis uses those same nerve paths, so if you have chicken pox, you're susceptible to shingles. But there's a genetic component to psoriasis, so one's at risk for that only if one's predisposed.
Bodies are freaky.
Amyth, good to see you're recovering well! Good luck on the exams, SA! And Sparky, that's a bunch of stuff in pretty close sequence. I hope if it's shingles, you have the same good outcome as flea.

I suspect the second night was racial profiling by MPD, as they were the ones who zeroed in on this faculty member as a suspicious person. My opinion only, with all the caveats that attach.
