Animation 1: I'm Not Bad, I'm Just Drawn That Way

A thread to discuss television and online animation.

Where do you come from? Where do you go? What is your scene, baby? We just gotta know.

SO, the Last Airbender movie was originally supposed to be released in theaters.

BUT, at some point during its production, Paramount announced that the movie was going to be streaming only. Which SUCKS, because I’m not going to be signing up for Paramount+ any time soon.

BUT, a couple of weeks ago Paramount (quietly) announced that they would be showing the film at one theater in Burbank and one theater in NYC for one week, in order to qualify for awards.

BUT, when I tried to get a ticket the theater’s web site was slammed, and I wasn’t able to get through before it all sold out. Bummer. I thought I wouldn’t be able to see the movie, at least for a couple of years until the Ellisons go bankrupt.

BUT, last night, the theater added MORE screenings, and I was able to finally get a ticket! Yay!

The movie looks SICK, by the way.

OK, that was beautiful. I’m glad I got to see it on the big screen.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I’m glad I got to see it on the big screen.

I'm kinda miffed I don't!

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

Any fans of Hazbin Hotel here?

That was great! She writes such great songs.

I haven't trusted science since I saw the film "Flubber."

Liz Callaway, who's a well-known Broadway and cabaret singer, was at DragonCon this year, ostensibly about Hazbin Hotel. She'd never been to a con before and didn't know what to expect, but the first question at the panel was about Anastasia (she was the singing voice) and the second was about Sondheim. It was a room full of my people.

You must've been all aglow at this confluence of fandoms.

I had similar feels when Peter Buck of R.E.M. did the Baseball Project and produced several albums of (excellent) baseball songs.

In animation news, the second episode of Knights of Guinevere is up (free, on YouTube).

This is an independent hand drawn animation by Dana Terrace who did Owl House for Disney.

The pilot caused quite a stir in the animation nerd world because it was So Freakin' Good! (and also a blistering satire of all things Disney - but so much more as well).

Anyway, the second episode is up and it is...gorgeous, dark, beautiful, fantastic characters, fascinating premise, queer coded, driving storylines.

Two episodes in and I would (provisionally) put it on the same tier as Cowboy Bebop or Avatar: the Last Airbender.

It's been up for 7 days and has 12M views.

I didn't even know Hazbin Hotel was musical. (Obviously I need to watch it now.) She got far more questions about musical theater and her work in animated films. Also, her sister wrote and performed the theme song for The Nanny, and she's a backup singer on that.
