Older dogs seem to start aging rapidly when a puppy is suddenly in their life.

Natter 72: We Were Unprepared for This

A woman I met in the park, once said of Bartleby (the Dalmatian/Basset Hound)...in a thick Southern accent, "Ih imagine, there was fernitcha involved."
I love this. I can hear the woman's voice.
It was pretty darned funny, Zen. The languid, sideways head roll made it even more charming.
I can't speak to sane numbers of pets since we are clearly crazy with two dogs and four cats. But also at our max and still able to afford and have love and time for all. We don't have kids, though, which is a big part of being able to wrangle our furry family.
Kaylee would have been happy as an only dog, which she was for almost two years, but Newton needs a companion. He is so attached to Kaylee, and the two of them love each other to bits. Our cats all love each other and snuggle...well okay, Mia as our old lady cat does not always approve of the shenanigans of the two-year-old twins, but she and Seamus are best buds.
It works for us.

With six cats, we resemble that remark. But everyone has different limits. And if three is your limit, then better to have three well cared for than four or five less-than-well cared for.
I go back and forth on Darb. Every so often she meets a dog she is mad for. And as C put it, she still kind of needs some peer pressure / coaching in how to act like a dog. But otoh we've kind of got a groove here and I don't want to mess with that.
ION, putting in an offer on the house today. I think it's pretty likely to be outbid, but we'll see.
Good luck, brenda!
Good luck on the bid, Brenda!
I had a crappy swim this morning, in part because I am pretty congested and blargh. But I have to give a presentation today so I need to be at work. Here's to a speedy AM.
Good luck, brenda! That house looks marvelous.
Me, I'm grousing about perimenopause. Bleargh. After I get a cup of tea I will take the dog for a long ramble, which will help my state of mind, I think.
