I once bumped into a pair of foreign tourists in the gift shop of the Sears Tower, and was astounded to find out they were French when I asked where they were visiting from. Their conversation sounded nothing like the French I've heard in movies, and I'd initially assumed they were from Greece or a Eastern European country whose language I'd never heard before. I'm guessing some non-Parisian dialect?
Quebec French sounds very recognizable to me, even though I only understand a few words.
