Kristen mentioned that Best Buy queues people up for doorbusters before the door opens and then go down the line handing each person a coupon for the item they are waiting for until they reach the end of the supply for the item. Before the doors open, everyone knows that they will get (or not get) what they wanted. It reduces the weird panic. That's preventative crowd control. If you do not have the resources to do this, do not have doorbusters.

They're dramatically in the minority, though, aren't they? I think other stores thrive on the idea of madness, they just hope it won't get Porter Ranch bad. But worked up excited people are more likely to rush into the store and buy *anything* to make them feel like it was worth the effort, and so the heavily discounted items are probably more effective loss leaders.

I have weaned myself from responding to people who are being wrong on the internet by forcing myself to be productive. At any given moment there are too many outstanding items on my To Do list, and after doing enough cost-benefit analyses of arguing with people on the internets or following fandomwank down the rabbit hole, I concluded that I'd be better off cleaning the bathroom, cooking, paying bills, catching up on my TiVo backlog, logging into work, or reading fic.

I had to look that one up, too:

A 2007 study by the Baylor College of Medicine indicates that the diterpene molecules cafestol and kahweol, found only in coffee beans, may raise levels of low-density lipoprotein or LDL in humans.

Paper coffee filters have a property that binds to lipid-like compounds which allows the filter to remove most of the cafestol and kahweol found in coffee. Brew methods which do not use a paper filter, such as the use of a press pot, do not remove cafestol and kahweol from the final brewed product.
