le nub- I was in a somewhat similar situation- I fired a student worker (via email) because she stopped coming to work. She also worked for another area, and had been recommended to me. The person who recommended her made her come and verbally apologize to me, which was super awkward, because I am a) not sure she meant it and b) paralyzed with not caring.

For my birthday I bought an ebook of Lord of the Rings. I haven't really re-read it in years, and the only copies I can find are the falling-apart Ballantine paperbacks I stole from my oldest sister back in the 70s. They'd probably be worth something if I hadn't taped them together to keep reading them.
But now I have an electronic copy I can search and bookmark all the Dwarvish poetry without dog-earing pages etc. Though the maps are a bit tricky on my Nook's screen.
