As a kid, I never washed my hair with shampoo -- much to the chagrin of my mom, I'm sure. I just put conditioner in to detangle. I recently saw a pic of 8 year old me and my hair was GREAT.

Maybe once my scalp settles into oil production that is not too extreme, I'll move to just conditioner.

The hat was okay. I have another one for tomorrow if necessary, but I hope it's not necessary.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

We're watching ABC Family's marathon of xmas specials and it made my kids quotable.

For Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Me: Look at young Santa! He's a ginger! Kris Kringle is a Weasley!
Emmett: Yeah, but he's a Weasley that went to Huffelpuff. He's like the Sirius Black of Weasleys.

For Jack Frost

Matilda: What's on the gopher's feet?
Me: He's a groundhog. And those are spats.
Matilda: What are spats?
Me: A little decorative thing that goes on your shoes.
Matilda: How do you kill it?

...then later...

The Gopher Groundhog on TV: [yawn] Well, I guess I'll turn in for six more weeks. Pardon me.
Matilda: [giggling] I think he had a gopher fart. He said 'Pardon me.'

Because books.

Why is it you're not supposed to shampoo?

Amy I don't know if you aren't supposed to, but for the past year or so my hair has been wrecked. Just dry and yucky. It just looks tired. So does my skin, actually.

I just look old. And worn out. Because I am.

Wait, is this real-world child support, where the money goes to buy food for the kids, or MRA fantasyland child support where the women just buy Ferraris and cocaine? -Jessica

I'm sure everyone has a different view of the effect of not shampooing, but IMO it won't change your hair, because hair is dead.

Curly hair is different. I mean, it's all dead, but it's much rougher in texture. Shampoo makes it so much worse. It took my scalp about two weeks to stop overproducing oil.

Kat, there's a shampoo that Loreal makes that has no sulfates in it that has some mint in it. It will make your scalp feel "clean" and not all gross. It's still too harsh on my curls, but I think would be cool with your straight hair. You can get it anywhere and it's like $7. The Deva Curl shampoo has that same mint in it to make your hair feel clean but it's like $20. Because I only shampoo every couple of weeks, it lasts a long long time, though.

So, until then, I just keep up with the BS and the ACV or tea rinses and the wearing of hats.

Sigh.

Now tagless for your comfort.

I've gone to washing every couple of days. I'll use a dry shampoo if I sweat too badly after practice but I try to reduce how much I use.

I don't use shampoo on the kids at all and their hair is incredible--soft and thick.

You have a LOT on your plate. But I'm not agreeing with the looking old part.

My hair is short, and so fine, I don't know if I'd see a real difference. And I like shampoo! It smells good.

Grace has the most amazing hair. For her, I think it's having a good diet high in vegetable fats -- coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil. And she has beautiful skin, which almost makes up for the wonky eye and the need to wear an eyepatch.

I wonder if the crap hair and skin is all just aging. Forty is turning out to be harsh on the body.
