I tried the no-shampoo thing. After a week my hair was one big itchy nasty tangle and I couldn't stand myself anymore.

I know why my pictures of the blue waffles mac and I made have so many views on flickr
Oh, that's seriously nast. People weird.
wore a hat for the whole day even
Was it a cute hat?
I missed the window on the Wire t-shirt for my sister. It was a UK store, and I can't depend on shipping. None of the ones I can find in the US are as cool, sadly. Back to some sort of drawing board. Which means surfing Etsy and Uncommon Goods, probably. Which isn't bad, but I dunno. I feel like it's always earrings or necklaces.
Okay. I need advice from you no shampoo people. How long until my hair figures this out? Are we talking weeks or months?
I'm sure everyone has a different view of the effect of not shampooing, but IMO it won't change your hair, because hair is dead. It will change the level of oil in it, because you are not stripping it daily. If you have drier hair, you may never need to shampoo. If you have more oily hair, you may need to shampoo every once in awhile, some people might even need it daily.
ETA: I condition every day, which I think washes out most of the product and extra grease. If I only washed with hot water my hair would be gross.
I tried not using shampoo and it took about a week to get past the grossness. However, with my very fine, thin hair, as soon as I tried using a bit of shampoo again it went back to greasy grossness. I think I could have stayed happy with no shampoo at all.
I went no shampoo when my hair was still long. It's probably the only reason I was able to grow it as long as I did (past my waist)--less wear and tear and more protection from oils.
I have always had oil skin and hair, but the hair normalized after a few weeks. Now I use a shampoo bar once a week or so, but my hair is in a bob again, and we're working on the house, so it gets hella gross.
As a kid, I never washed my hair with shampoo -- much to the chagrin of my mom, I'm sure. I just put conditioner in to detangle. I recently saw a pic of 8 year old me and my hair was GREAT.
Maybe once my scalp settles into oil production that is not too extreme, I'll move to just conditioner.
The hat was okay. I have another one for tomorrow if necessary, but I hope it's not necessary.
we never shampoo mac's hair, just hot water, scrubbing and conditioner.
We're watching ABC Family's marathon of xmas specials and it made my kids quotable.

Me: Look at young Santa! He's a ginger! Kris Kringle is a Weasley!
Emmett: Yeah, but he's a Weasley that went to Huffelpuff. He's like the Sirius Black of Weasleys.

Matilda: What's on the gopher's feet?
Me: He's a groundhog. And those are spats.
Matilda: What are spats?
Me: A little decorative thing that goes on your shoes.
Matilda: How do you kill it?
...then later...
The Gopher Groundhog on TV:
[yawn]
Well, I guess I'll turn in for six more weeks. Pardon me.
Matilda:
[giggling]
I think he had a gopher fart. He said 'Pardon me.'
Why is it you're not supposed to shampoo?
Amy I don't know if you aren't supposed to, but for the past year or so my hair has been wrecked. Just dry and yucky. It just looks tired. So does my skin, actually.
I just look old. And worn out. Because I am.
