I didn't much care for The Magicians, but I recognize that Grossman has talent as a writer. I'm wondering if maybe he should have conceived of that book as 2-3 books. He doesn't manage tone shifts particularly well.

When I read it, I felt like he put too much in it for just one book. It needed either very ruthless editing or to be spread out into at least 2 books.

I'm iffy on the book in general. At times I was so painfully aware of how derivative it was that it took me out of the story. But some parts were really engrossing. It was just very uneven.

For me, it was one of those classic "hmmm, I'm really liking this...yeah, this is good... huh, that's an odd choice... oops, it just went completely off the rails..." books.

I believe there's a sequel out. I may read it eventually, but I'm not in any rush.

????? Really.

Damn him, I know I'll read it. I'm an easy mark. (Well, like I said, the parts that were engrossing were quite good, but the Narnia stuff just made me roll my eyes.)

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Oooo! Calling Plei and Cass! I just was directed to the Zoya site and saw the new Smoke and Mirrors collections. Holy cannoli, are they pretty. Any thoughts on either set?

I kinda want them all, but rationally know I wouldn't wear all of them. But Petra, Codie, Marina, Tao, and Yana are particularly yummy to me.

Steph, are you on Goodreads? If so, you (or anyone else) can find me here: [link]

Also, if anyone knows a Goodreads equivalent for movies (that's not Flixster or I Check Movies), I'd love to know about it.

good points, really. and yes, uneven.

I cannot believe the sequel. I'm going to wait to read reviews before I dive in.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'm always startled where people see slash where I can't even imagine it. Apparently Sherlock fandom went crazy about a pair of mugs? Is it possible y'all need some canon, stat?

Because books.

I want to know when "personal fanon" became "headcanon".
