My baking tends to just be for holidays and special occasions, so I freeze my flour and sugar between times. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, and it saves them from insect problems.

In the process of finding room in my refrigerator for flour, polenta, and bulgur, I kind of... took everything out and cleaned almost the entire refrigerator. And did a quick purge of stuff from the refrigerator and cupboard.
I may already be avoiding Yuletide.
