I remember going to the mall one 12/24. I will never do that again. Mom's talking about doing a bit of shopping this Friday, and I nipped that idea in the bud--after working retail for years, I flat-out refuse to go anywhere near a store on that day. (Although grocery stores do tend to be empty that day, so that's the only place I'd go.)
Oh, and a quick reassurance about the sick Thanksgiving weekend--after finding out I was ill, I made it a point to stay in the back room and away from customers as much as possible. I was just there if the other employees needed me and then for closing the store.

The secret is to go out for drinks first. And possibly during. Definitely after.
The last time I worked on Christmas Eve was a few years ago at B&N. It got really slow after 3:00, and we were glad to leave after closing at 5:00. The regular staff were all leaving after finishing cleaning the store at 5:45 (the manager was helping the cafe manager with some last-minute stuff), and as we were opening the door to leave, a customer was trying to come in. We had to stop and tell him that we had been closed for 45 minutes already, and if he was shopping for the next day, he'd have to go elsewhere.
I'm planning on doing the last of my grocery shopping tomorrow morning...thank you zipcar...and am as grateful as ever to NOT be traveling over the holiday.
I love the "Turkey Bowl", touch football game in the local park, watching the city leaf pickup (I'm assuming it's a giant overtime scam, but find it amusing anyway), and the terrific stillness of the neighborhood after abut 3pm when the entire place nearly snores in unison.
