Well, we may not have parted on the best of terms. I realize certain words were exchanged. Also, certain... bullets. But that's air through the engine. It's past. We're business people.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

My boss just handed me a check! Hooray! Not only is the money nice, but it makes me feel slightly badass -- this is the result of my trying to negotiate the salary.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

and she would pause everything if she saw a student with a confused look on her (my) face and ask what it was I didn't understand.

I sometimes try to do this, but I have several students who just seem to look confused all the time, but when I ask them if they're having trouble, they say that everything is fine. Maybe I'm just not so good at reading expressions. (I remember, in the textbook for the one psychology course I took in college, there was a page with photos of people's faces cropped down to just the eyes, and a caption saying that, even with most of the face blocked, we can all easily match up these faces with the emotions they were expressing. I stared at that picture for about 20 minutes and could never figure it out.)

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

SoA! Huzzah!

FOX is on everywhere here.

Oh god! Did everyone see the Team Evil/Team Stupid debate on TDS?

I think as long as you're asking, you've demonstrated your willingness to teach. Eventually, one of them will follow up on it. The only teachers I really disliked were those who assumed you could keep up and denigrated you when you asked for clarification.

So sad here this week--one of our recent retirees, and a lady I'd gotten to know really well before she left, just lost her son to ALS. He was only in his mid-40s and was just diagnosed a few months ago, but went downhill really fast. A bunch of women just headed over there to visit while she sits shiva.

I couldn't stop giggling! Loved Wyatt and Oliver in those t-shirts, and I'd have to go with Team Evil for Fox News--they were too obvious about avoiding using the name of the head of that organization.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

That sounds like a great first day, Hil!

{{brenda}} Did you figure out what's causing it?

I am likewise relieved that the summer shows are wrapping up. It's been a lot to keep up with. I have a lot of discretionary time to spend with my DVR, but it still makes me feel like I'm neglecting it with its accusatory high percentage of filled disk.

And none of us deserving the cruelty or the grace -- Leonard Cohen

I've saved a bunch of Luna bar wrappers to send to Terracycle, but I haven't sent them yet. I'll let you know if/ImeanWHEN I do it.

Sorry, brenda. Sounds frustrating.

I have so many tabs open in Safari that I think my laptop is going to explode.

I am reminded of my high school calculus class. The teacher would always ask if anyone had any questions/if everyone understood what he had just said, and eventually he said, "OK, I am going to take silence as meaning that you all get this 100%." I swear, I was the only person in that class who ever asked a question, but I do not believe I was the only person who ever HAD a question.

Because books.

Sons of Anarchy starts up next week. Ron Perlman and Katey Sagal FTW!

That's definitely one of the returning shows I'm looking forward to. But there aren't many *new* shows I'm excited about.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I've had calculus professors who could tell by my expression that I knew the answer, so I sometimes got called on for that reason. Usually I'd only raise my hand when no one else knew the answer, or sometimes I wouldn't raise my hand at all if I was afraid I might stutter.
