"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Emma is probably my most-loved actress in the whole world.

I've had good luck finding thrift finds at stores affiliated with specific charities. Couple weeks ago I was poking around Fillmore with Jen K. and Emmett and I dragged them into the little thrift that benefits the SF Symphony and they had great stuff at good prices. I got two really nice silk ties (one of them from the Frank Lloyd Wright series that I love) for just $5. One for me and one for Emmett.

Right nearby are two other thrifts linked to local Catholic schools, which is where the rich people send their kids in SF. So there's lots of rich-person leftovers like fancy scarves, ties and costume jewelry.

I've also found a good one in the East Bay affiliated with a hospital and got a great pair of vintage men's shoes (with perfs and everything) in my size for just $8. Also a cool mod scarf, and a dress for JZ. Every clothing item in that store is $4.50, except for some fancy dresses. So you can get a suit there for $9.

Now tagless for your comfort.

So obsessively combing the sex offender database has revealed ANOTHER sex offender on my FB friends list. A Wisconsin person who friended me through another friend.

Excuse me while I go purge my friend list. I'm going to throw up. I should just start running criminal background checks.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Jesus, Cash. You're making me paranoid. But I have no kids to protect. I can't believe you found a friend of Owen's father. Good thing you know now.

Oh, wow. That's really disturbing.

I checked the database here last summer, and there were more than twenty offenders in this town alone, which is not that big, and that freaked me out. But I didn't *know* any of them.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Jesus Christ, Cash.

That's exactly what I said out loud! I need to get off this list before I lose it.

A well liked former coworker (well, I found him annoying) was caught and convicted of looking at underage porn on gov't computers several years ago. It was...yeah. A lot of really upset people, all finding out through word of mouth. There was very little coverage.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I checked the database here last summer, and there were more than twenty offenders in this town alone, which is not that big, and that freaked me out.

I will note that when I worked for my friend Cecily (a criminal defense attorney) she talked a little bit about how punitive the sex offender lists are and how they're impossible to get off no matter what you do afterwords. She had clients who had been Good Citizens for twenty years who were on the list for acts they committed when they were young. And they couldn't get jobs and couldn't live in a lot of places. The punishment winds up going on long after their time in jail.

Also, people do wind up on the lists sometimes for things like statutory rape which the courts, prosecutors and defense attorneys do not consider to be a big deal.

Which is not to say that there aren't predators and you don't need to be careful. But the lists cast a wide net and there are people on it who are not a risk to anybody anymore.
