Supposedly, the Russian ice dancers have toned down the offensiveness of their "Aboriginal" routine. I'm kind of skeptical, since I've seen no indication in any interview that they or their coach actually understood why people objected.

Get recs from bank, other recent homeowners in the areas and/or your realtor. I went with my realtor's rec, and was happy with that (of course, I had the easiest mortgage ever. Broker even said I was the easiest, most vanilla mortgage ever, because I was pretty much prime mortgage material. He even told me I could've done it all by myself.)
Paperwork is pretty much taxes for the past year or so, a few paystubs, bank account info, and agreeing to let them look up your credit report. Oh, and at some point, your employer has to give them some sort of confirmation of employment, but that's when you actually GET the mortgage.
