I think my Italian/Swedish thing was less based on looks and more of a "your accent is way too good for an Anglo-Saxon and you're tall" thing.
It seems clear that a handful of people are taking steps on company time to start their own company.
Welllllll, I spent about 1/4 of my time during my last few months at my previous job hunting for, and eventually landing, my current job. With my manager's approval. Hell, we traded job leads, as our skill sets didn't have us in competition. Then again, the director whose organization included my previous job was doing his level best to eliminate it, so I felt it was self-preservation.
Is your office screwing people over in a dramatic fashion, msbelle? If so, I'd let it ride.
msbelle, I think I would. I think creating something at work is very different from just using work resources.

Heh. A friend of mine has a brother who's about 12 years younger than her. When she was a teenager out with her brother, people would give her dirty looks as they thought he was her son.
Calli - I don't think they are screwing people. Bad management? yes. Low to no bonuses? yes. Job insecurity? some.
On the other hand, people in sensitive positions are spending 30-50% of their time on building a different company, and are using company paid resources for some of the work.
