I'm always puzzled by the word "ethnic." I once went to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with a friend. After the movie, I said I thought it was funny. My friend said she didn't really like it, "but you can probably relate to the characters better, since you're from an ethnic family."

Aren't we all of one ethnicity or another? Or multiple? I am puzzled by its use as a stand-alone descriptor, as well.

ETA: Just looked up the meaning of "ethnic" and it appears my ethnicity is "Buffista".

I will say the photo is pretty stunning in its lack of any color at all, but pale white. I suppose at least they aren't encouraging skin cancer?

"Ethnic" means you're white, but its pretty much on a technicality.

A large part of my confusion was over why being Jewish makes me more able to relate to Greek people.

People with large and voluble families were probably the people who found it easy to relate to the family in that movie.

Ah. So, Southerners.

Well, Jews aren't quite white because the whole religion thing, darker than that Vanity Fair's cover complexion, exotic yet still mostly familiar ingredients food that one can be "into", colorful parental behavior, prominent noses, loud arguments, and coarse dark hair.

Greeks aren't quite white for just about all the same reasons. (They have Christmas and Easter all wrong you know...)
