Liese, I have something similar going on, but different joints (mainly my knees) though some cycles it skips. Actually gave me shinsplints one time since I apparently adjust my gait to compensate for floppy joints. It's kind of fascinating, actually.
We had covers like those Scrappy linked to on all the observatory dorm beds. Red, blue, avocado, yellow... I will forever associate them with cinderblock walls, hurricane lamps and Tang.
I was thinking of something like what Scrappy posted, but with all ridges or cording.
