It's the same thing -- on the ground with your legs all the way out. In a googlefight, "do the splits" won by a lot over "do a split." [link]

I'm glad I actually didn't do a slit/splits. I can picture myself lying in agony on a hospital bed, while doctors and nurses argue over whether I did a split or the splits.
