Sweet lumpy minion, you're the only one that understands. Probably 'cause I haven't sucked the brain out of you yet.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

This early in the run, the film and digital prints will look almost identical. In a few weeks (once the film's been run through the projector a few hundred times) the digital will look better.

ION, Avatar is pretty freaking awesome. Dances with giant Ewoks comparisons aside...this is a movie where a pterodactyl blows up a helicopter. In IMAX 3D. I mean, DUDE. DUDE.

My one major quibble with the worldbuilding is that the Na'vi should have had four arms. Every other vertebrate on the planet has 2 pairs of front limbs - there are six-legged rhino, wolf, and horse analogues, and all the pterodactyls have four wings and two legs. And yet the Na'vi have only one pair of arms. What gives, Cameron? (This is not a spoiler for anything but the production design, but what the heck, spoilerfont is easy.)

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

I just read a Spidey 5/6 spoiler that probably dictates plot in Spidey 4:

I'm sorry, but WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK??? Uh, no. MJ does NOT die, because... just NO.

God DAMN. That's like killing Lois Lane. It just ISN'T DONE.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Wait--I just checked and it's to all happen in 4. Apparently Anne Hathaway is to play Black Cat. I'm not a Spiderman purist by any stretch, but even I get that's wrong.

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

Arnie's head now looks too big for his body. Very freaky.

Love the Pegg/Frost pics.

Speaking as someone who now lives in a town with one cinema, I can't wait for all-digital projection. The prints we get hear are abominable, so digital has got to be an improvement.

move out and draw fire

I wrote a fairly long piece on Avatar for my work blog yesterday, and ended it with two questions:

1. If what psychologists say is true, and men opt to use female avatars in games and virtual worlds when they can...shouldn't Sully's avatar have been a girl? And how would that have changed the movie?

2. Was the character called Jake SULLY because the humans were sullying Pandora? Or because he's a giant blue CGI creature with a tail?

Heh - I was wondering if he was named after the Hudson river pilot.

As to #1, I'm not sure he had a choice, but it would have been an interesting twist. (Ooh, can we have a movie of Glasshouse next?)

brillig

Just back from Sherlock Holmes. I very nearly loved it. They didn't explain who Holmes and Watson are, they assumed you have a decent familiarity with the stories--or that you are willing to just accept who these people are. There was a reasonable reason for everything, and the Holmes-Watson relationship was very nicely handled.

Won't say more, you'll need to see it for yourself. But much better than I was afraid it would be. And it looks terrific.
