Right. Piano. Because that's what we used to kill that big demon that one time. No, wait. That was a rocket launcher.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Hidalgo, Alatriste, etc, not big movies with big box offices.

No, but he got paid a lot to do them. So he cashed in on LoTR afterwards.

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

Spiderman, Dark Knight, I don't think anyone was ill-served by those, although they featured actors who had a lot more prominence at the time.

But the stars of those movies had established careers. If the question is whether a fantasy franchise can *make* a career for you, Tobey Maguire and Christian Bale are somewhat irrelevant. We're talking relative unknowns here.

Somewhat ironically, apparently Maguire is being considered for The Hobbit.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

Somewhat ironically, apparently Maguire is being considered for The Hobbit.

That's actually fitting, unlike, say, PETER PARKER.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

I like him as Peter Parker. Spider Man 2 is about is good as you're going to get on the big screen for web-headiness.

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Yeah, they should have picked an actor that *didn't* have organic web shooters.

See, everybody thinks Scola is so nice but that's just poking a stick into the lion's cage.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

If the question is whether a fantasy franchise can *make* a career for you

What about the Harry Potter kids? Don't count because they were too young?

And it's not just fantasy. Any big franchise.

Let me think...Hugh Jackman. He took his Wolverine exposure and blew the hell up, in my estimation. But he's still being Wolverine the whole time, so that kinda doesn't count...

Kiera Knightley has done pretty well, and I think that her main exposure was Pirates, although Bend It Like Beckham got her good indie visibility.

Hec, do you have cites for how much Viggo was paid for his subsequent films? I'm curious about him pleading money problems if he was raking it in.

Has he claimed money problems lately or just after LoTR?

He made lead man money for Hidalgo. Upwards of $10 million I expect. I'm not sure where I'd find that info. (Where's JenGod when you need her. I bet Ethan would know.)

I guess it would be in online news archives.

Anyway, he'd have a lot more money if he didn't buy every horse he worked with.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Okay, he made $2 million for Hidalgo. But he needed the money desperately then because he hadn't worked for a couple years after LoTR.

Within a couple years of the end of the franchise, which includes the filming of Hidalgo and Alatriste.
