I saw the After Earth trailer today and thought, "Hm. This dialog is very, very Scientology based" and "Hm. Why are they doing those goofy accents?"
M. Night?
That explains it.
I liked The Sixth Sense and love the one of his films that seems most hated, Unbreakable...but I've given up on him in every say since then.
I too wonder how he got a film financed...unless Will wanted the vehicle so badly that his name carried it.
Huh.
Getting to make it a father-son movie makes it seem much more likely that that's the case. Dude, just make home movies with the kid and accept that no one but your family will want to watch them!
Will AND JADEN Smith. Jaden Smith seems like the worst.
Jaden was okay in the Karate Kid remake. Perfectly cromulent and pretty likeable.
They were on Ellen together recently, and instead of going over to the chairs like a normal guest, Jaden had to run through the audience slapping hands. And throughout, he basically yelled "LOOK AT ME!!!!" any time people weren't admiring him.
So maybe he's a fine actor, but as a teenager in real life? The worst.
but as a teenager in real life? The worst.
Growing up the famous kid of movie star parents will do that to you.
I think
Unbreakable
was hated when it first came out, in comparison to Sixth Sense, but is less so now since it's basically a masterpiece compared to all of the more recent ones.
Most M. Night discussion I've read seem to think each movie is progressively worse than the previous, all the way down to The Last Airbender. Seems about right for the ones I've actually seen, though I might like Unbreakable a little better than The Sixth Sense in hindsight (not in at-the-moment sight, though; The Sixth Sense definitely brought me more immediate pleasure, but Unbreakable stuck with me some.)
I still hate
Unbreakable.
To be fair though, I can't compare it to anything more recent because I hated it SO much that I haven't seen any of his movies since.

That's the most hated? I love that one, probably more than The Sixth Sense. I thought
The Happening
was the most hated. Or
The Last Airbender.
I think most people forget
The Lady in the Water
even exists.
I think he has good directing talent. I just think he needs to direct someone else's scripts.
