Every time I saw a commercial for Oblivion, I just muttered, "Time for Iron Man, DAMN IT." But I am a skewed demographic.
Also, I saw a trailer for Gatsby last night, and holy crow, it looks so stunning visually. Which I expected from Baz Luhrmann, but still, actually seeing proof was gratifying. t edit And I think Tobey Maguire is brilliant casting for Nick.
The visuals for Gatsby annoyed the hell out of me; I'm not sure why.

See, if that white male lead was Jason Statham...maybe. Tom Cruise, never.
There are only about 5 speaking roles in the entire movie, and they are all eyeroll-inducing stereotypes.
Are the other roles, speaking or not, pointedly not white and/or pointedly not male? I don't know anything else about the movie other than a baseball cap affectation and Morgan Freeman.
I get the feeling that about half an hour of the movie is just Morgan Freeman lighting a cigar in the dark.
I honestly can't see myself ever watching a Tom Cruise movie again. He really gives me the creeps.
I think I could sit through Risky Business and still enjoy it, but I haven't actually tried, so who knows.

For speaking roles, there's Tom Cruise, the redheaded woman, the dark-haired woman, Morgan Freeman, and the guy who plays Jaime Lannister. And one more woman who doesn't talk but stands behind Jaime Lannister with a gun. The other people onscreen are mostly in full body armor.
Just the fact that Tom Cruise is the white male lead is enough for me to pass on the movie. I can catch it for free on cable in 3-4 years and fast-forward to the landscape sequences.

Exactly. Teeth and craziness and couch-jumping and ego.
Me too--I find him oily, and the character he plays onscreen and off is offputting enough that he blows the protagonist for me. And the intensity with which he plays the "I'm still a young buck! I'm happier than you! And cooler than you!" makes me want to exit the room.
I could probably watch Top Gun again. I haven't seen any of his movies in the theatre since...Collateral. Oh, maybe Rain Man and A Few Good Men, but I don't remember the movies well enough to be sure there's enough distraction from his future self.
For a short guy, he sure casts a long shadow...
