Oh, and I sent an email to that student who had complained about my grading system. I explained the system again, pointed out that, in the five or so different emails I sent out over the course of the semester with the breakdown of average grades to letter grades, each one was slightly different, and they were meant to give the students a sense of where they were at that point, not of what to aim for at the end of the semester, and I used the phrase "as I explained in class" a lot, because he was almost never actually in class and I was getting annoyed by that point in the email. (That last is possibly not as mature as I should have been, I realized after I sent it. But it's not like he can complain about that.)

Heh. A friend of mine who became very Orthodox a few years ago sent me an email telling me that she's working for Aish HaTorah (a group dedicated to getting Jews to become super-religious), and her job is to find "secular Jews" who want to go on low-cost trips and learn about Judaism, and wanted to know if I'd be interested in being one of those secular Jews.

She knows that I light candles, observe the major holidays, and go to synagogue every once in a while. But I don't keep Shabbat, and I don't keep kosher, and I wear jeans and shorts and tank tops, so I'm secular. Oh, and I watch TV. Clearly secular.

In her view, Conservative = secular. Some people who consider themselves Modern Orthodox might be secular to her.

It's not to Jerusalem. If it were, I might go, even though it's Aish HaTorah. It's trips to places within the US. I think it's spiritual retreat type things.
