I'm from Israel.
Ooh, nice to meet an Israeli. The Girl (my long-suffering other half) is from Tel Aviv originally, although she's a resident here now (UK). The song is indeed 'My Hat Has Three Corners'. I keep forgetting how it goes, and then I get it sung at me very slowly with actions. OK then. My problem with the Hebrew letters is because I'm dyslexic. I think once I get past those, it might go a bit better. Thanks for the offer of help. I may take you up on that!
What are you researching? Hope it gets more bearable soon!
Disability Studies? What's the topic?
Rehabilitation, and whether it would be needed, to the extent it is now, if society was more inclusive and accommodating of disabled people*. But I can get very boring about disability activism and my studies, so I attempt not to let myself go on. Not always successfully.
*The term we tend to use in the UK. I know Americans prefer PWD. Two nations divided by... and all that.
Sunil! Random Buffista dream last night. Someone in DH's family had passed away and P-C naturally decided to fly to Fort Lauderdale to pay his respects. He declined to stay with us because we had so much family to deal with and booked a room at Dave's Motel on the beach. Dave's was a basic beach dive and this biker dude showed us the room and explained that although it didn't have a lock no one had ever had a problem. Ok, P-C leaves his stuff and we walk down the beach. It is apparently Spring Break and there is a mob of scantily clad college types all over the beach. Unlike a typical city sky I am trying to show P-C that there is a meteor shower going on and the sky is filled with stars like a mountain sky, with dozens of streaking meteors. P-C only sees a handful of random bright stars. Also, a chick at one of the tiki bars insists on demonstrating her skin care products using P-C as an example. He was cool with that. And then I awoke.
Wow, Laura. I never remember that level of detail of my dreams.
And going from Laura's beach to Colorado snow. I woke up to a white landscape with more snow falling. Gonna work from home. Oh joy.
Wow. That's much more interesting than my dream. I dreamed that I was buying a couch, and the salesman was telling me that one of the reasons I should buy from his store, rather than somewhere else, was that they took the tags off the couches before they sold them. (And, yes, I did wake up to find the tag of my pillow rubbing irritatingly against my neck.)
Seska, The main Israeli of the board is of course, Nilly. I don't know if you got to see her in Natter yet, but she's wonderful, and have the seniority in Israeliness and Buffistasness.
My Hat Has Three Corners, transliteration:
Lacova sheli shalosh pinot
Shalosh pinot lacova sheli
Lole hayu lo shalosh pinot
Lo haya ze hacova sheli
And now, taking care in my somewhat ground-zeroish house, followed by statistics I can't make sense of, and reading even more papers. I'm really starting to like history studies, you know? It's easy there and everyone's telling me I'm intelligent. Sociology/Anthropology, NSM. Still intelligent, but hard, when involves numbers.
Also, Dear apartment in my building with a band practice in it:
I know you're probably students. I know you probably don't have a lot of time to meet for practice. I also know you suck badly, and need said practice. But Memorial Day will start in about 3 hours, so you better shut up soon. Seriously.
Not love,
Me
Driving to work I remembered another detail. P-C loved my car and wanted to drive it, but he didn't know how to drive a standard and I didn't think the Fort Lauderdale airport was the best place to learn. That part clearly resulted from my dismal attempts to teach my son to drive a stick.
Ah dreams. My dreams very often feature crowded party type scenes. One of my woo woo friends insists that these are real parties with spirits living and dead socializing. Okay.
I know you're probably students. I know you probably don't have a lot of time to meet for practice. I also know you suck badly, and need said practice. But Memorial Day will start in about 3 hours, so you better shut up soon. Seriously.
Oh, as they say, dear. Hang in there, Shir-- homicide is not a good mix with statistics.
Nora, what's your paper on? Are you a fellow grad student? I'm writing a research methods paper at the moment, and it's driving me slightly loopy. 2000 words down, 4000 to go. And then I get to start on the Disability Studies paper of the same length (this being my actual MA subject).
I am doing a legal analysis/research paper for my Law & Higher Ed class on legal recourse available to those denied tenure. (Short version: it's a hard row to hoe.)
Yeah, basically, unless you have a handwritten note from the chair or the APT committee that says "we're not giving X tenure because's s/he's [insert protected class here]", you're kinda stuck.
