Whoa. Good myth.

[NAFDA] Spike-centric discussion. Lusty, lewd (only occasionally crude), risqué (and frisqué), bawdy (Oh, lawdy!), flirty ('cuz we're purty), raunchy talk inside. Caveat lector.

Our wings are not tired.

Question for Mad Men lovers. GF and I have a weekly girls night where we drink wine and complain about our teenage boys while watching a television show or movie. We have watched Lost together for years, but the season just ended and we need a new girl's night show. We are polar opposites. She is a Brooklyn girl with a potty mouth, loves boxing and rap music. Her entertainment shows are reality stuff on MTV, Gray's, and um other stuff I don't watch.

Neither of us have seen Mad Men and it looks on the surface like something we both might enjoy. Thoughts from those in the know?

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

it peaked at #12 in 1994.

Those kids are now 15, so I guess they were passing out of LL a few years ago.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Laura, I say Yes. Mad Men is awesome.

The show is uniformly excellent. Fantastic writing, great performances, scrumptious production. S1 was very good, and S2 was even better. Fun to watch with drinks.

The only complaints I've heard are from people who (a) can't abide the oh-so-realistic depictions of sexism and racism of that era and (b) people who find the characters unlikeable.

I think (a) is a virtue of the show and I like the complexity of (b). I think the show is very engaging and thought provoking but can also be enjoyed just on the narrative level. It isn't always light, though.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Laura, Mad Men is awesome; I think you would both like it.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

What Hec said. Now that BSG is over, Mad Men probably gets my vote for Best Thing On TV.

One of the reasons I thought of the show is that my friend is very in to fashion. (another way we differ) The screen shots I have seen were very pretty.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

Excellent choice, Laura. It's a grown-up show that should go very well with wine.
