In theory ITA that the tiger should have been moved somewhere that she couldn't be a danger to humans, since the SF Zoo proved itself completely incapable of being that somewhere itself. In fact, as she was in the middle of killing and eating a human, killing her was the only option.
At that moment, anyway. There's still a heap of failure on the zoo's part. It failed to move her someplace safer after her first attack, then failed to create adequate barriers between her enclosure and the humans, and finally failed to have properly-loaded tranq guns at close hand and make sure that staff knew where they were and how to use them -- though, as the Guardian reporter pointed out, even if someone had been there to tranq her immediately, siberians are so massive that it still would've taken several minutes for the tranq to take effect so a human might have died anyway.
At that moment, killing her was totally necessary, but still 1000% the zoo's fault, not hers (and not even so much the stupid teens' -- she was in an unsafe, escapable space, and if it hadn't been them it would've been something, anything else that eventually kicked her into predator mode).
Also, weren't the teens in the zoo after hours? I got the impression that they somehow had managed to stay in - or get in - after closing. Which would say something sad about ALL their security.
That's really neat, Scrappy!
I'm going to a John Muir Assoc. awards dinner on Sunday. Otherwise, no plans, just chillin' around the house, probably working in the yard and suchlike. Oh, I guess maybe I'll shop for a tree to plant next Tuesday. DH just realized today that he has Monday off, so we didn't make any plans. Which, honestly, will be nice.
DH has flown down to Oklahoma for a memorial service, so I'm a single parent for the weekend. So if I can maintain my sanity until he gets back Monday, it'll be a good weekend.
Cashmere, if Owen likes gritty things, has he tried Grape Nuts? (do they still make them?) I remember them as being like what (I think ... I haven't tried it) kitty litter would be, texture-wise.
Does anyone remember Binky the polar bear?
I do! I even have the book.
Not even touching on how sad and angry and nauseous the Titania incident makes me. Poor tiger.
This weekend:
there are possibilities , but the only thing set is Matt gets a haircut at 8am tomorrow.
possibilities include a teen acoustic music show - a good long walk in the city , putting up the molding on the bookcase, a folk/hammered dulcimer show on Monday. maybe a movie. a nap - oh wait the nap is for now
Today I have off, and I'm writing in a coffee shop, rather stereotypically. The guys sitting next to me are brainstorming starting a brewpub. Yes, have good food, I want to tell them. Make it sunny and open and in my neighborhood so I can walk to it!
Tomorrow I go shopping at the restaurant supply store and to the theater, and Sunday I am having some friends over to watch some Firefly and Serenity. Monday? Maybe writing. Oh, and running tomorrow, Sunday, and Monday.
A seeing-eye dog whose owner died. The dog is too old to be retrained with another owner, but needs a good home to retire to, which we hope we can be. We go meet the pup this weekend.
Fun! My ex-Minion's parents have a dog who failed out of helper dog training. His dad has now got her trained to go out and get the paper in the morning and get stuff from the fridge, etc.
Weekend:
Tomorrow: Work and staying inside
Sunday: FOOTBALL! (and staying inside)
Monday: Could be anything (but will likely involve staying inside)
