I'm just waiting to see if I pass out. Long story.

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Ann, that's a ferret.

How newish or well known do these have to be?

Crime and Deviance: Monsieur Verdoux, Rope

Family: Nothing in Common

Gender and Sexuality: The Philadelphia Story

Families: Life With Father, Kildred Pierce

Socialization: Now Voyager

Social Stratification: The Adventures of Robin Hood

Would Social Interaction include "circle of friends" movies? I'm thinking of Steel Magnolias, which I've never seen but sounds like it would fit here.

Shit's all sorts of different now.

Gender and Sexuality: The Philadelphia Story

I would actually put that under "Social Stratification".

Ann, that's a ferret.

I think it works under either, depending on your focus. I was thinking of all the men's treatment of Tracy, especially her father and Dexter claiming that her failure to "act like a woman" (my words describing their sentiments) causes so many problems.

But if you center on the very class-conscious Mike or George, Social Stratification also works.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

I think the movies should be fairly newish and not too obscure. but I'm going to throw in a few classics where they really fit the theme.

Thanks again everyone, this is very helpful.

Ann, that's a ferret.

I threw in Monsieur Verdoux because I just saw it and really liked it. Charlie Chaplin in a comedy about a Bluebeard. Truly weird and truly wonderful.

Invisible Green - May 06, 2008 11:22:20 am PDT #5547 of 10000

Gender and Sexuality: Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Crime and Deviance: Dressed to Kill (De Palma) [this could fit under gender and sexuality as well]

Technology and Society: Sliver, Cloverfield

Religion: Wide Awake

Social Stratification: Gattaca, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride

Also, Strega mentioned Cronenberg's Crash, which could fit under Technology and Society in addition to Gender and Sexuality.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

The Ruling Class - Peter O'Toole: Social Strata and possibly gender - a quirky choice for one of your classics.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Someone said Heathers, right?

Yeah, I skimmed. Possibly skipped. Wanna make something out of nothing? I means--it's patently impossible with the differing number of letters.

And also, the drugs talking. Way too much effort to search.
