Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

hatred of Barry Lyndon

I'm sure I know what each of these words mean individually, but in this order they make no sense.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

ugh I found it tortuous. It was like Candide but without all the light-hearted funny bits.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Is it really worth it?

It would be difficult to think of a movie less like Barry Lyndon. The Killing is one of the all time great film noir, plus a classic heist movie. Sterling Hayden is great. Timothy Carey's most famous role.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

It would be difficult to think of a movie less like Barry Lyndon.

Dude, Where's My Car?

Compassionately intolerant

Laga speaks my Barry Lyndon mind. It must have been the context in which I saw it, but it really made me want to poke my eyes out. Last year, I tried a re-viewing just to see if I might appreciate something about it. Nice costumes.

In wildly unexpected news, I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall today and cackled through most of it. I went to requite my insane Russell Brand love and came away with a smile on my face. Predictable? In the extreme, but I still really enjoyed it.

If anyone sat through the credits (my friend had to pee...) was there anything after the NBC "Animal Instinct" promo ? Which, by the way, seemed entirely plausible and cracked me totally up.

Are you kidding? It's the only other movie besides Barry Lyndon that's lit entirely with candles.

move out and draw fire

Hmmm. I'm not sure I buy that The Shining was about the wipeout of the Native Americans. But it's the kind of media analysis I adore, so I'll keep reading the essay.

I find the discussion about how Ravenous is about the consumption of the wilderness by Manifest Destiny more compelling.

Also, and completely out of left field, has anyone done the Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon thing? Is that bullshit or does it actually work?

yes! In fact I own a copy of the movie synched to the record.

Is that bullshit or does it actually work?

Depends on how high you are

"...One of the things any audio professional will tell you is that the scope for the drift between the video and the record is enormous; it could be anything up to twenty seconds by the time the record's finished. And anyway, if you play any record with the sound turned down on the TV, you will find things that work..."

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Plus, in Barry Lyndon, Ryan O'Neal was stoned the entire time.
