Absolutely. It is clear that Precious Moments devotees don't define art.

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I'd calll Precious Moments figurines "art" by the definition I tossed out a couple days ago. They're definitely created for a non-functional purpose.
But my definition is decidedly intent-based, very broad, and definitely allows for "bad art."
You know, when you are 500+ posts behind in Movies, it's probably best to just give up.
And, as in all things, I am the One True Authority on What Is Art? (Which does include many functional things, but not Precious Moments).
I'm so glad to hear I was defining art too broadly. What about Thomas Kinkade?

Skippers/skimmers don't get to decide. Neener.
Was the guy even looking at the painting he allegedly painted when he wrote this description?
quaint hansom cabs convey tourists to and fro, and crowds of shoppers and celebrants fill the streets.
OK lots of people don't know what a hansom cab is but I looked and looked and I only see one carriage.
What about Thomas Kinkade?
Not Art.
Also Bush's favorite painting? Real borderline, tending towards Not Art.
Skippity/Skimming? Art.

oh hai - invisible hansom cab
Now I want to LOLcat some paintings.
Just to complicate matters, I'll toss in the fact that I had a relative who loved Precious Moments figurines, but didn't consider them Art. Cute, sweet, precious, adorable, and all sorts of variants on wee and darling, but for all that she was under their spell she didn't at all think of them in the same way she thought about the Monet and Seurat prints she had on her walls.
Is Hello Kitty art? Because I consider Precious Moments and Hello Kitty in the same league.
