Fred: So you don't worry that it's possible for someone to send out a biological or electronic trigger that effectively overrides your own sense of ideals and values and replaces them with an alternative coercive agenda that reduces you to a mindless meat puppet? Shopkeeper: Wow. People used to think that I was paranoid.

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Are you saying an axis with Roy Orbison at the top is Evil?

Are you saying an axis with Roy Orbison at the top is Evil?

No, just making a lame joke about the Axis powers (circa WWII). I think I managed to block Shrub's invocation of "axis" temporarily.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

one of the factors that hasn't been mentioned yet is the crucial question of *Who* Is Entitled To Define Art, And Why.

Everyone. That's why this is one of my favorite bullshit topics.

Yes, but not everyone agrees that Everyone is entitled to define art. Many people, in fact, don't think that Everyone is entitled to define art; they think that only *they* (and the people who agree with them) are entitled to define art, and the rest of Everyone (i.e., who don't agree with them) are ignant plebians.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Absolutely. It is clear that Precious Moments devotees don't define art.

Ann, that's a ferret.

I'd calll Precious Moments figurines "art" by the definition I tossed out a couple days ago. They're definitely created for a non-functional purpose.

But my definition is decidedly intent-based, very broad, and definitely allows for "bad art."

You know, when you are 500+ posts behind in Movies, it's probably best to just give up.

And, as in all things, I am the One True Authority on What Is Art? (Which does include many functional things, but not Precious Moments).

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

I'm so glad to hear I was defining art too broadly. What about Thomas Kinkade?

Skippers/skimmers don't get to decide. Neener.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

Was the guy even looking at the painting he allegedly painted when he wrote this description?

quaint hansom cabs convey tourists to and fro, and crowds of shoppers and celebrants fill the streets.

OK lots of people don't know what a hansom cab is but I looked and looked and I only see one carriage.

What about Thomas Kinkade?

Not Art.

Also Bush's favorite painting? Real borderline, tending towards Not Art.

Skippity/Skimming? Art.
