Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
There are also seven different musicals that have won Pulitzers for Drama.
Or say, anything on Broadway.
Wait, they are making a musical of "Say, Anything"!?!
Actually, I hate Rent. I had no interest in seeing it when it was playing at the dive theater down the block, and when I finally heard a few songs after it moved to Broadway, my opinion wasn't changed. I was simply looking for a modern example.
Rent?
I've only seen the movie, not the stage play, but I gotta say, I'm not a big fan of Rent.
When the movie opens and all these "hip, bohemian" starving artist types are setting their shit on fire and tossing it out the window, well...maybe I'm just an old fart, but my first thoughts were "That's not gonna help your case any. And if you're setting your shit on fire to keep warm, it's gonna do jack for you in the street. I'm just sayin'."
Philistine.
Wait, they are making a musical of "Say, Anything"!?!With that toe tapping anthem to career indecision "I don't want to sell, buy or process."
I'm not a big fan of Rent.
See above.
In general, I'm not a big fan of musicals where, unless you've listened to them beforehand, you can't understand the words. See also, Phantom of the Opera.
Once again I feel so lucky to have been led to this place. It's incredible to me that I can be part of a discussion like this on the internet. There were a couple of times when I felt maybe we had hijacked the movie thread but then the conversation would come back around to Michael Bay. Also as a result of points raised here I have added "My Kid Could Paint That" and "How to Draw a Bunny" to my netflix queue.
Grandma can yell about Ornette Coleman's music being noise all she wants
But Ornette Coleman's music IS noise. It's just very good noise (IMO).

Wait, they are making a musical of "Say, Anything"!?!
I'd see that. They've already got a bunch of songs about Joe to use.
I don't have to eat shit, I can smell it.
See, I've seen that used as an elitist putdown before, so I can't say I'm very fond of it.
