'Out Of Gas'

Buffista Movies 6: lies and videotape

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Nana korobi, ya oki. (Fall down seven times, stand up eight.) ~Yuzuru Hanyu/Japanese proverb

Damn, first Brad Renfro and now Heath Ledger? It's just not right, losing young talent, young lives, like this.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Oh my god, that's awful.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

I do feel awfully selfish, grieving for a stranger this way. But, like many here (hi Jars!) I've loved watching him since way back when and felt such gratification when he blew up all over the place.

Yes, this.

Never fall in love with somebody you actually love.

I'd imagine those Why So Serious? posters will come down pretty sharpish.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Yup. I loved him in ROAR, too. I was a sucker for that sort of show.

I think celebrity grieving is a difficult topic. Of course it's strange and offputting for the family to have a whole whack of people grieving that don't know him at all. But with artists, they put so much of themselves out there for us to consume, I think it's natural for us to feel the loss.

It's perfectly all right to grieve.

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

It's really not my place to grieve, but he did his job well enough that I do.

Yes, this.

Thrive to spite them

I'm really upset too and sadden. He was so talented and he was one of the actors that I liked to read about it.

If it is suicide, that's what it sounded like they were hinting at, I hope people don't say cruel things. Sometimes they do, saying oh he was selfish or how could he. Which isn't really cruel, but. I'm so sad for him and Michelle Williams and his little girl.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Yeah, I was thinking, you know, people die all the time, in worse ways, even younger, and we don't really feel the hit. But with artists...well, you put it very well, thanks.

Because books.

Yeah, I'm really shaken up. It came out of nowhere. Like JZ, I was expecting to see him in so much more post-Joker. It's crazy.

So much this.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

I think it's similar to what happens when politicians die in plane crashes (which they seem to do disturbingly often). People lard their hopes or imaginations into the human figure, and have to mourn the "death" of that imagination as much as they mourn the death of the real person whom they never met.

My coworkers in 2004, who had never even lived in the same state as Paul Wellstone (and thus didn't have direct reasons to lard their hopes into him), flipped their lids when he died.
