A lot people at the time did not think Vietnam strategically important. The whole "Domino" theory was a rationalization for why it was worth fighting over an otherwise unimportant nation. Oh I'm sure the people who advanced it were sincere, but they also had all these theories about how to win wars with airpower, and minimal numbers of ground troops that they wanted to test.
I've read that the Vietnam war wasn't so much about "communism taking over" as Vietnamese nationalism asserting itself, and as a result of our obsession with fighting communism we missed this fact.

I'm really surprised about this. Each year for the past five, maybe ten, years, they say that they're going to vote on this, and then come back with a decision that's something like "This is a difficult issue that requires much consideration."
