...well, officially I'll be doing "preparatory work for the school's opening in September 2006" - but wtf does that mean? Shmoozing with prospective parents? Planning? I'm baffled. And not entirely sure whether I should accept. I mean, on the one hand, full salary and benefits to fanny around in Cairo. Nice. On the other hand - a whole year of not getting any classroom experience and being thoroughly out of the loop wrt teaching in the UK. Not so good, if this is my career and vocation.

I know that I could walk straight into a job with Evil Former Boss, no bother. He's still recruiting. Or I could accept the payoff and then stay here and temp. Only I'd need to sort things out in Cairo, with the flat and the cat and all that jazz. And I don't want to leave yet. I like my life out there.

Fay, are there any openings where you are right now? would it be possible to let them buy out the first year's contract and then go back the year after instead? What is your flatmate planning on doing?

OTOH, you might be planning overarching curriculum materials and programs and such. Talk to them about the details and maybe even hint at your concerns about being out of the teaching loop. WHo knows? Maybe there is a small group of parents who might be interested in this school on a reduced size scale and you could lobby to teach a class in a hotel conference room or something.

Also, if you let them buy out the first 3 months, can you finagle a ticket too to go back and retrieve what you need, deal with your flat and kitty etc?

All very good questions. I'm pretty sure that my flatmate will return to Cairo, even if she isn't offered classroom work. And in terms of social life and so forth, I want to go back. I like sharing with flatmate, I like my cat, I like my neighbours, I have friends in Cairo - I'm not finished with the place. But the whole not-teaching thing has thrown me for a loop. If I do accept it, I'll be actively seeking tutoring work for the evenings to keep me on my toes (and supplement my income, 'cause why not).

The alternative would be to accept a 3 month payoff and try to get temp work in the UK. And that's probably the smart move, careerwise, really.

Scientists released harmless tracer gases in midtown Monday as part of a study designed to better understand how airborne contaminants would flow through the city's streets.

"We want to be prepared if something nasty gets into the air," said Paul Kalb, a senior research engineer at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton.

In four locations, researchers released the colorless, odorless gases using syringe pumps, which slowly dispense several milliliters of the tracer in liquid form at regular intervals. When the tracer leaves the pump, it evaporates almost immediately.

I just know that people who aren't familiar with the city often have a hard time with the subways. And if everyone Nora knows is staying in midtown, or thereabouts, she's probably better off closer.
