I'm boggled too 'suela, mainly at the ballsy stupidity.
But the rage? Whoa. It's a totally effective shunning from fandom. But I can't just get invested emotionally to whip myself into a rage over this.
It makes me think about how the sense of anonymity allows people to act/react in ways they wouldn't IRL and how amazing that is.
I guess the moral is never underestimate the craxy of fandom.

Level with me here, I do not need calc three to learn about how many cultures knew the Pythagorean Theorem before the rise of Greece, right? Cut me some slack, Jack."
"Dear Dr. X: I am extremely interested in the History of Math course you are teaching this fall, and am wondering if there is any flexibility with the prerequisites. I have taken Calc 2 and linear algebra and [blah blah love math or something], so I just wanted to check with you to see if there was any way for me to get into your class. Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
I imagine some of the rage is coming from people who have as little, or less, and consider it right that they pull themselves up by their bootstraps. And other portions of it from the unwanted attention cash-for-fic could bring.
I think that if people ask for money and get it, power to them. The problem is in how large a shadow that request throws.
