We got Buffy on WGN until it moved to UPN.

When theWB was first trying to add affiliates, it got WGN in Chicago. TheWB allowed (actually probably encouraged) WGN to broadcast theWB programs locally and on its national WGNSuperstation cable/satellite feed. Thus theWB programs were broadcast into areas throughout the US where theWB had no local affiliate. Over time, theWB added local affiliates in a number of markets (largely on the basis of “Buffy” and “Dawson’s Creek”). Those affiliates did not want the competition with WGNSuperstation also broadcasting the same WB programs in their market. So, theWB withdrew its permission for WGN to broadcast its programs outside of Chicago. Beginning with the fall of 1999 (Season 4 of "Buffy") WGN continued to broadcast theWB programs in the Chicago area but broadcasts different programs on its national feed. (I think the only programs now broadcast both locally and on the Superstation are Cubs baseball and the news.)

Sigh. Watched Chosen last night.

I've been getting all nostalgic, remembering the beginning. For me, it was the movie. Actually, an ad for the movie. Pike and Buffy are dancing, and he says "You aren't like other girls," and she answers "Yes, I am." It's a sad, poignant moment, and it got me. I watched the movie. I got excited when I found out about the series, especially, since it was going to star Kendall from All My Children. I faithfully taped my snowy broadcasts out of Sacramento - watching the first season on DVD was quite a revelation of detail for me. I made my boyfriend watch, until he started insisting on it himself. I bought two VCR's so I didn't have to choose between Buffy and my other TV addictions. I named my feral porch cat Patches. I screamed when the Breeders played the theme song to open their show. I eventually found the Buffistas, where I am like other girls.

And now it's all history. The text is complete. I'm back at the sad moment, dancing in the dark. But Buffy left me with a smile. What are we going to do now?

Well, as for me, although it's no "Buffy," I'm going to enjoy watching "Firefly" for many years. Oh, damn.

Also? The only reason I caught the ep (it was a weird travel day that involved being at my mother's house for the evening, so Tuesday? Huh? Where am I?) is that my mother was flipping through the channels (I wasn't watching) and ran across it (post cookie dough/Angel) and said, "Now, isn't this that show you like so much? Isn't she that girl? Don't you want to watch this?"

What a mom. She even laughed at the Faith/Wood scene during the "I'm way prettier than you," and the "... you were [thumbs up] enthused ...," which, you know, she's not a prude or anything by a long shot, but she was born in 1928, so unmarrieds talking about their casual sexual encounters? Not her usual form of entertainment. Go, Mom! Go, Buffy!
