I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

I made homemade caramel sauce. There was a point in the process where I poured heavy cream onto molten sugar and it expanded to three times its original volume in hot froth and steam. It was very dramatic.

I am a woman of various inclinations and only some of the time are they to burn everything down in frustration

That sounds exciting.

Why did Darth Vader cross the road? To get to the Dark Side!

Homemade caramel sauce is amazing.

Suzi, you are truly a saint. I can barely handle parenting my own kids.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Does anyone have a good resource for "funny" bow ties and socks (I'd love to get him a matching set if possible) for my 12 year old nephew? I'm suddenly really wishing I had kept the business card for this awesome bowtie vendor I had seen at a craft show last year.

The sky is overcast as we wait for a storm to roll in. But for just a couple of minutes, the sky sank below the cloud level and illuminated the valley before it went down behind the mountains. Tolkien would have loved my valley.

We are Buffistas. This isn't our first apocalypse. -- Pix

Hey, folks. It's been a mad weekend of family and activities with the under-8 crowd, so of course I'm exhausted. Crashed on the futon with the dog loudly chewing her squeaky ball and a nice hot toddy now.

I think the ~ma must have paid off. My brother made the wisest decision he could: he's taking the consulting gig his old company offered, and will patch together a couple of other part-time gigs, and actually live with his family for the next year (he's been doing a Monday-to-Friday commute from Denver to DC, which has been awful). I'm really pleased: I hope this means he gets to spend some solid time with his kids and relax a bit with his wife.

Me, I'm trying to decide if I should get off the couch and make macaroons, or just sit here and maybe start watching Jessica Jones.

I look more rad than Lutheranism

You're welcome! I thought of you as soon as I saw it.

Every now and then, I think I might actually be a little odd.

Who sent me the green snowflake ornament? It must have fallen out of a package or an envelope because I found it on the floor and I know I've never seen it before! It's very pretty and I put it on a hanging basket to wait until I get the tree up. A mystery snowflake appeared!

It really has been chaos around here, with the moving of stuff and the enthusiastic helpers.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Tep, I remember when you got that car! And when we drove around in in together for the first time. :) Good times.

I spent my afternoon/evening taking a friend to the Zoo Lights, which is like one of those holiday light drives only at the zoo, and with a little train ride. It was silly and fun, and we saw polar bears. My friend is Japanese, and we spend a fair bit of time discussing words, both in American English and Japanese. Apparently in Japanese, polar bears are called white bears (which makes rather more descriptive sense), or shirokuma.
